By chance we happened upon a telephone number for the "Okavango River Lodge" in one of our guidebooks. Yes, they had space and could accommodate us in their rondavels (we needed a clean bed and hot water to get rid of the dust). The Lodge is situated on the outskirts of Maun, en-route to Moremi.
What a pleasant surprise! On arrival, we checked into our en-suite rondavels (comfortable and reasonably priced) set amongst huge trees, full of birds. We then went for a drink at the bar (overlooking the River, dry at that stage but expecting the flood waters at any minute). A swim in the ice-cold pool is a welcome relief in the heat of the Botswana summer (backed up by the 'in pool' bar service!). The rest of the afternoon was spent lazing around the pool.
At sunset the Maun locals began arriving for sundowners and a very entertaining evening (that turned into early morning!) was spent swapping stories.
The Okavango River Lodge was the best accommodation and customer service we had in the whole of Botswana!

As we had spent the last few days bush camping, we thought
we’d find some comfy ‘digs’. We stayed in this quaint camp on the
Thamalakane River called Okavango River Lodge.
It was a sort of ‘watering-hole’ for all and sundry - especially expats of any
sort!!! A wonderful braai under the African sky was the perfect end to the day.
